Ophthalmic Laboratory Technology - Overview

Overview

Ophthalmic laboratory technology programs teach people to make prescription eyeglass or contact lenses. Students learn how to analyze prescriptions. They study the processes of cutting, grinding, edging, and finishing lenses. They also learn to operate equipment that is used to make lenses.

Speedy services done for you "while you wait" play a role in today's fast-paced society. Experienced workers need just an hour to develop your photos or dry-clean your clothes. They need only a few minutes to make you lunch!

Nowadays, retail optical stores can be added to this list. Laboratories are on site at many of these shops, where technicians can also make your eyeglasses in just a few hours. Statistics show that more people will need to order eyeglasses and contact lenses in the near future. This means that ophthalmic laboratory technicians are in demand.

About 25 community and technical colleges offer certificates or associate degrees in ophthalmic laboratory technology. In addition, you can take courses through opticianry programs. A certificate typically takes one year of full-time study after high school. An associate degree typically takes two years.
